Calcariidae (Longspurs and Snow Buntings)

  • Phylogenetic placement: Passeri: Passerides: Passerida: Emberizoidea
  • Distribution: Eurasia and North America
  • Number of extant genera: 3
  • Number of extant species: 6

Traditional genus-level classification of extant Calcariidae following the AviList checklist v2025. (link) The number of subspecies is given in parentheses. The phylogenetic arrangement is based on Cai et al. (2021), who showed that Calcarius is not monophyletic. As a consequence, ornatus and pictus will have to be transferred to the genus Leptoplectron. The non-monophyly of Calcarius is also shown in the BOW Phylogeny Explorer tree v1.6. (link)
